I figured the first thing I should post is a little about why I named my blog “out and back.” For whatever reason, I became a fan of amusement parks and the associated stomach-churning and neck-snapping when I was a small child, and roller coasters were (and continue to be) the main attraction for me. I love them all, and even if I’m too scared to ride some of them, I still love to stand and watch them go.
Anyone who shares my obsession knows that roller coasters come in a variety of styles, colors, heights, and designs (sort of like shoes, my other passion in life) and my favorite coaster design happens to be the classic “out and back,” which is just what it sounds like: you ride out in one direction, then turn around, and ride back to the station. Steel Force at Allentown’s Dorney Park is a good modern example of an out and back coaster, if you’re curious.
“Out and back” is also a good description of the way I think and write… I very often start out with a particular idea, and as I ponder or discuss it, I find that it leads me to a few other places before I eventually turn back and return to the originating concept. (And there is usually a lot of screeching, waving of arms, and nausea involved in the process, too…) So all in all, it seemed like a good fit for my blog.
By blogging, I’d like to stretch my writing muscles a bit (it has been a long time since I wrote regularly) and share some of my world with any readers who might happen along. I like finding and sharing interesting things, so hopefully this space will be overflowing with them before too long.
With that said, please keep your hands and arms inside the vehicle at all times….
Cheers.
I grew up in an amusement park town in Massachusetts with a roller coaster that I never went on, but I loved it as a landmark and, sadly, it was torn down in the early 80s. Good luck with your blog…looks great…and you started it on my birthday.
